The Merger Mara Refused

Chapter 04 - The Merger Mara Refused

Northbridge Surgical Robotics had been founded by Mara and Lena’s father, Elias Marlowe.

The company built precision systems used in cardiac and neurological procedures. After Elias died, Mara inherited the controlling shares because she had worked beside him for twelve years.

Lena inherited a smaller medical-research trust and chose nursing instead of corporate leadership.

Adrian married Mara two years later.

He became chief strategy officer, then chief executive.

Public profiles called him the visionary who transformed a family workshop into a global company.

They rarely mentioned that the patents, laboratories, and first hundred million dollars came from the Marlowe trust.

The proposed merger would transfer Northbridge’s patents to Crown Apex Capital, close two domestic factories, and leave patient-liability claims inside a weakened shell company.

Adrian would receive a five-year management contract and a large personal bonus.

Mara’s signature was required.

She refused after discovering a concealed appendix.

The appendix authorized the sale of anonymized surgical data to insurers and employers. The data was not truly anonymous. It could be reconnected to individual patients.

Mara scheduled an emergency board meeting.

Before it occurred, she was injured.

The operation delayed the vote.

The incapacity petition would allow Adrian to vote her shares.

“This wasn’t an argument that became violent,” Serena said. “The medical documents were prepared before the argument.”

Mara nodded.

“He needed me unconscious, frightened, or legally invisible. Any one would have been enough.”
