Nora’s Personnel File

Chapter 10 - Nora’s Personnel File
Camilla’s defense began by attacking Nora.
Blackwood’s attorneys released her personnel file to the press. It contained disciplinary warnings, allegations of theft, and a psychiatric evaluation describing her as obsessive.
Nora had never seen any of it.
The warnings were dated on days she was not working.
The theft involved a silver bracelet found in her locker.
The psychiatric evaluation carried Dr. Hale’s signature.
Nora had never been his patient.
The family had prepared a credibility file on the one employee Edward trusted.
Detective Serena traced the bracelet accusation to Camilla’s assistant, who planted it during an inventory review. The same assistant received a promotion.
Nora’s actual record contained thirteen years of excellent reviews.
The contrast became evidence of institutional intimidation.
Reporters gathered outside her small apartment.
Some called her a heroic maid.
Others called her an ambitious employee who manipulated a disabled heir.
Nora disliked both stories.
She gave one statement.
“I did not discover the truth because I was extraordinary. I discovered it because I was present when powerful people assumed presence did not count.”
The line spread across the country.
Hotel employees began contacting investigators.
A concierge described directors using guest surveillance footage.
An accountant revealed Meridian payments disguised as renovation deposits.
A driver remembered transporting Dr. Hale to Bellweather Road the morning after Adrian’s crash.

The family’s secrets did not collapse because one housekeeper knew everything.
They collapsed because one witness made it safer for the next witness to speak.
