The Housekeeper Who Remembered Everything

Chapter 05 - The Housekeeper Who Remembered Everything

Nora Reyes had not planned to become important.

Important people were photographed. Important people signed documents. Important people could leave rooms without being asked who would clear the glasses.

Nora preferred usefulness.

Usefulness survived attention.

She knew the west archive had three entrances. She knew which hallway camera Lucas disabled after Edward’s death. She knew Camilla visited Dr. Hale’s clinic every Thursday at six, though she claimed to attend charity meetings.

Most importantly, Nora knew Edward had installed a manual evidence vault beneath the manor’s original wine cellar.

The brass key did not merely open digital files.

It activated the physical locks.

Police had not yet arrived because Blackwood security controlled the estate road. Lucas had ordered the gates closed for “guest privacy.”

Nora sent a silent emergency message through the catering system to Mateo Ruiz, the head groundskeeper.

Mateo had worked for Edward for twenty-seven years.

His reply contained three words.

NORTH GATE OPEN.

Adrian noticed the message.

“Can we reach the cellar?”

“Not through the house.”

The accessible elevator required Lucas’s biometric approval.

The service path crossed gravel and two steps.

Adrian looked toward the garden.

Nora understood the calculation. He hated being carried because family members used physical assistance to ignore his decisions.

“We use the greenhouse ramp,” she said. “Your father had it widened last year.”

Adrian nodded.

They moved while Lucas argued with the board attorney.

Nora pushed the chair through the flower arch, past waiters gathering broken crystal, and toward the greenhouse.

Camilla saw them.

“Stop!”

She lifted her dress and followed in silver heels.

Adrian turned one wheel sharply, helping Nora angle the chair through the narrow path.

His upper-body strength had improved for months, though the family’s physician continued describing him as completely dependent.

Nora had watched him recover quietly.

Not because he wanted to pretend to be disabled.

Because every sign of improvement caused Lucas to increase pressure for signatures, evaluations, and access to his accounts.

At the greenhouse door, Adrian gripped the frame and shifted his weight independently.

Camilla stopped several yards away.

“You can move more than you told us.”

Adrian met her eyes.

“I told my physical therapist.”

“You hid it from the family.”

“I hid medical information from people who turned it into financial leverage.”

Nora opened the door.

They entered the greenhouse.

Behind them, Camilla removed her shoes and began running.
