Adrian and Nora

Chapter 17 - Adrian and Nora

Rumors about Adrian and Nora began before the trial ended.

Photographs showed her beside his chair at court, in the greenhouse, and during company meetings. Gossip sites turned proximity into romance because service, loyalty, and professional respect seemed too quiet to sell.

Nora resigned from direct household employment before joining the ethics committee.

She wanted no uncertainty about power.

Months later, Adrian invited her to dinner.

“Is this a company meeting?” she asked.

“No.”

“A rehabilitation update?”

“No.”

“Then you should know I dislike restaurants where the menu has no prices.”

He chose a neighborhood café with laminated menus.

Their relationship developed slowly.

Adrian had spent years surrounded by people who treated assistance as ownership. Nora had spent years being praised for self-sacrifice whenever she ignored her own needs.

They established rules.

He would not employ her personally.

She would not manage his medical schedule.

Neither would use gratitude as obligation.

Love, if it came, would have to exist outside rescue.

A year later, Adrian asked whether she wanted to move into his new apartment.

Nora said no.

Then, six months later, she asked him.

He said yes.

The difference mattered.
