The Blanket’s Second Secret

Chapter 08 - The Blanket’s Second Secret

The navy blanket contained more than the brass key.

A seamstress at the police evidence unit found a narrow strip of waterproof fabric sewn beneath the lining. Inside was a micro-storage card.

Edward had recorded one final meeting.

Lucas, Camilla, Dr. Hale, and the Meridian representative sat in the manor study six weeks before Edward died.

Edward accused them of using company loans to purchase private property through shell companies.

Lucas replied that the hotels needed outside capital.

Camilla said Adrian would never approve the sale after learning the debt figures.

The Meridian representative asked whether Adrian’s accident had changed his voting capacity.

Hale answered.

“Capacity can be documented according to circumstances.”

Edward’s chair scraped the floor.

“You are discussing my son’s diagnosis as a transaction condition.”

Lucas said, “We are discussing continuity.”

Then came the sentence that changed the crash investigation.

Camilla asked, “What if he remembers Bellweather Road?”

No one answered for six seconds.

Hale finally said, “His medication makes recall unlikely.”

Edward ended the meeting.

The recording continued after he left because the device remained beneath the table.

Lucas spoke first.

“Dad will change the trust.”

Camilla answered.

“Then we change the timing.”

Edward suffered his fatal heart attack forty-eight hours later.

No evidence yet proved murder, but the recording established motive, medical manipulation, and knowledge of the crash.

Adrian listened in the manor’s temporary police office.

His hands remained still on the blanket.

Nora stood near the door.

“I spent a year thinking my memory failed me,” he said.

“You had a concussion and medication chosen by people who benefited from doubt.”

“That does not give the memories back.”

“No.”

Nora did not offer false comfort.

Evidence could restore credibility.

It could not restore time.

Adrian looked at the repaired seam.

“My father hid the truth in something they considered a symbol of weakness.”

“The blanket?”

“The thing Camilla believed made me look helpless.”

May you like

Nora folded it across his knees.

“Warmth is not helplessness.”
