Emma’s Unfinished Wedding

Chapter 11 - Emma’s Unfinished Wedding

Emma returned the wedding gifts unopened.

She kept one object: the handwritten vows Lucas left in the bridal suite.

The vows described trust, partnership, and building a future together.

Attached to the same folder was an email from Lucas’s attorney reminding him that Emma’s signature on the marriage certificate would activate the pension-fund proxy.

Emma read the contrast twice.

Then she gave both documents to investigators.

Lucas called from his attorney’s office.

“I loved you.”

Emma did not deny it.

“That is what makes this worse.”

He asked her to separate the marriage from the business arrangement.

She laughed once.

“You scheduled them fifteen minutes apart.”

Emma’s father admitted his pension fund knew Meridian planned to pressure Blackwood’s debt. He believed the sale would stabilize the hotels and protect retirees.

He did not know Lucas intended to use the marriage proxy.

Emma demanded an independent review of the fund.

Several trustees resigned.

The wedding video continued circulating online: Camilla spilling champagne, the blanket falling, Nora restoring it, the bride walking away.

Commentators praised Emma for leaving.

She rejected the label.

“Leaving a ceremony is not courage by itself,” she said. “The staff members who preserved evidence while depending on the family for wages took the larger risk.”

She funded legal representation for Blackwood employees who came forward.
