The Physician at the Wedding

Chapter 07 - The Physician at the Wedding
Dr. Hale attempted to leave through the south drive.
Mateo blocked it with a landscaping truck until state police arrived through the north gate.
Hale claimed a medical emergency required his departure.
Detective Serena Cole asked for the patient’s name.
He could not provide one.
A search of his wedding bag found two prepared documents.
The first certified Adrian as permanently incapacitated.
The second certified him temporarily competent to approve the Meridian sale.
The signatures were dated the same day.
Serena placed them side by side.
“Which man were you expecting to examine?”
Hale looked toward Lucas.
Lucas looked away.
The doctor requested counsel.
Nora gave Serena copies of her medication logs. Adrian consented to an independent blood test.
The results found a sedative not listed in his official prescription record.
The dosage was low enough to create fatigue and slower speech without causing obvious unconsciousness.
Adrian remembered the morning dose.
Hale personally handed him the capsule before the wedding.
“You said it prevented muscle spasms.”
“It does.”
“It also made the board think I could not follow a conversation.”
Hale remained silent.
The investigation expanded.
Pharmacy records showed the same sedative had been filled under Adrian’s name for eleven months. Nora’s notes proved he received only some of those doses.
The missing medication went somewhere else.
Detectives searched Hale’s clinic and found private charts for Blackwood executives, trustees, and spouses. Each chart contained two versions: one medical, one strategic.
COMPLIANT.
RESISTANT.
USEFUL DURING VOTE.
LIKELY TO CHALLENGE FAMILY.
Hale had not been treating a family.
He had been categorizing obstacles.
Emma returned to the estate after hearing police arrived. She changed out of her wedding dress and gave Serena the prenuptial drafts Lucas’s attorney sent her.
One clause transferred Emma’s father’s pension-fund voting rights to Lucas after marriage.
The wedding would have secured both Adrian’s shares and the Ward fund’s Meridian interest.
Lucas had built a transaction out of two relationships.
Emma looked toward the empty altar.
“I thought he chose the date because it was his parents’ anniversary.”
May you like
Adrian answered.
“He chose it because Meridian’s debt option expires tomorrow.”
