The Wedding That Was Also a Board Meeting

Chapter 02 - The Wedding That Was Also a Board Meeting
The guests had been told the wedding ceremony would begin at four.
The actual schedule contained another event at three forty-five.
An emergency board consent.
Lucas Blackwood needed every director present to approve the sale of Blackwood Hotels to Meridian Equity. The company owned fourteen historic properties, three private clubs, and the land beneath Blackwood Manor.
Adrian still controlled thirty-one percent of the voting shares.
His late father’s trust prevented a sale without the eldest son’s written approval.
Camilla had prepared the solution.
A temporary guardianship order declared Adrian medically incapable of understanding complex financial decisions. If a physician certified incapacity during the wedding weekend, Lucas could vote Adrian’s shares as family guardian.
The physician was already among the guests.
Dr. Warren Hale stood near the fountain in a silver suit, avoiding Adrian’s eyes.
The bride, Emma Ward, looked from Lucas to the directors seated in the front row.
“You told me they were here because they were family friends.”
“They are,” Lucas said.
“You scheduled a corporate vote before our vows.”
“It was a timing necessity.”
Emma removed her hand from his.
The alarm continued.
Security officers moved toward the west wing, but Nora’s supervisor blocked the terrace doors.
“Mr. Lucas ordered everyone to remain outside.”
Adrian looked at Nora.
“The key.”
She slipped her fingers into the torn hem and removed a thin brass piece no larger than a collar stay. One end carried a pattern of tiny magnetic contacts.
Camilla’s face lost color.
“That belongs to the company.”
Adrian held out his hand.
Nora placed the key in his palm.
“My father gave me this blanket after the accident,” he said. “He said it would keep me protected when the house became cold.”
Lucas descended from the altar.
“Dad was confused near the end.”
“No. He was frightened.”
Adrian inserted the key into a narrow slot hidden beneath the wheelchair’s right armrest.
A small screen awakened.
ARCHIVE ACCESS RESTORED.
The alarm stopped.
Then every phone belonging to a Blackwood board member received the same notification.
PRESERVATION PROTOCOL ACTIVE. NO ASSET TRANSFER PERMITTED.
Camilla stared at Adrian.
“What did you do?”
“Nothing,” he said. “You opened the blanket.”
Nora remained beside him.
She had spent ten years serving the Blackwood family and eighteen months helping Adrian adapt to a home designed for people who never imagined losing mobility.
She knew the difference between his calm and his fear.
He was afraid now.

Not because the family had humiliated him.
Because Edward Blackwood had hidden something powerful enough to stop a billion-dollar sale—and everyone on the terrace knew where the key had been.
