The Vault Beneath the Roses

Chapter 06 - The Vault Beneath the Roses
Edward’s greenhouse grew white roses for every Blackwood wedding.
Beneath the center planting table was an iron lift designed for crates of soil. Nora moved three ceramic pots and found a concealed switch.
The platform lowered toward the cellar.
Adrian held the brass key.
“Did my father show you this?”
“He showed me the lift. Not the vault.”
“Why trust you?”
Nora considered the question.
“Because I told him when he was wrong.”
Adrian almost smiled.
The lift stopped beside a stone corridor. At the end stood a steel door with a brass swallow engraved above the lock.
Adrian inserted the key.
The door opened.
Rows of archival boxes filled the room. A server cabinet glowed behind glass. On a central table rested a red leather folder labeled:
IN THE EVENT MY FAMILY CHOOSES CONTROL OVER TRUTH.
Edward’s voice played automatically from hidden speakers.
“Adrian, if you are hearing this, I failed to correct the company while I was alive.”
Footsteps sounded in the corridor.
Camilla had found the lift.
Nora closed the steel door, but the lock did not engage from inside.
Adrian opened the red folder.
The first document was an independent analysis of his brake line.
SABOTAGE CONSISTENT WITH DELIBERATE TOOL DAMAGE.
The second was a payment from Blackwood Hotels to a security contractor three days before the crash.
Authorized by Lucas.
The third was a medical ledger showing Dr. Hale received quarterly consulting payments from Camilla’s private foundation.
Nora kept turning pages.
Falsified neurological reports.
Draft guardianship orders.
A plan to sell Meridian the debt at a discount.
Then a handwritten statement from Edward.
I knew enough to act and waited because exposure threatened the company. My delay endangered my son.
The steel door moved.
Camilla forced it open with a garden spade.
She entered, barefoot and furious.
“Give me the folder.”
Adrian placed it on his lap.
“No.”
“You do not understand what happens if those files leave this room.”
“Yes, I do.”
“The hotels collapse.”
“Then the hotels were already collapsing.”
Camilla reached for the folder.
Nora stepped between them.
Camilla stopped—not because she respected Nora, but because a small red light blinked above the door.
The vault was recording.
Edward’s voice continued.

“Every action in this room is preserved outside the estate.”
For the second time that afternoon, Camilla had exposed herself by grabbing the wrong thing in front of a camera.
