The Burned Tag at Carousel Six

Chapter 01 - The Burned Tag at Carousel Six

At 9:17 p.m., Carousel Six at Northbridge International stopped with a violent shudder.

Passengers gathered around the belt as a dark blue suitcase lurched forward, struck the metal edge, and dropped onto the tile. One wheel snapped free and rolled across the arrivals hall.

Airport operations director Evan Mercer reached the suitcase first.

He was tall, polished, and dressed in a charcoal suit with an executive badge clipped to his lapel. Behind him stood Clara Hayes, the evening baggage supervisor, wearing a navy work shirt beneath an orange reflective vest.

The suitcase belonged to eighty-year-old Margaret Ellis.

She pushed through the crowd with both hands raised.

“Please be careful. My husband’s things are inside.”

Evan ignored her. He lifted the broken case by its handle and let it fall again.

The remaining wheels cracked against the floor.

Then he turned toward Clara.

“You signed the belt inspection.”

“The belt was working when Flight 218 landed.”

“Then explain this.”

Evan held up a yellow baggage tag stained with black scorch marks. The printed code was partly burned away, but one number remained visible: 317.

Clara felt the blood leave her face.

Flight 317 had burned in a cargo-hangar fire twelve years earlier.

Her husband, airport auditor Michael Hayes, was declared dead after entering that hangar to investigate missing baggage.

No body was ever conclusively identified.

Evan raised the tag so passengers and cameras could see it.

“This tag came from a restricted evidence locker. It was found attached to Mrs. Ellis’s suitcase. Only baggage control staff have access.”

Whispers spread through the hall.

Clara looked at the suitcase.

The zipper pulls were wrong. Margaret’s claim sticker showed green thread around the handle, but this bag had black tape beneath the leather grip.

“This is not her suitcase.”

Margaret stepped closer.

“It looks like mine.”

“It was made to.”

Evan removed Clara’s airport badge.

“You are suspended pending investigation.”

A teenage boy ran through the security lane before guards could stop him.

It was Clara’s fourteen-year-old son, Noah.

He held another yellow tag above his head.

“Mom! I found this under the carousel.”

The tag carried the same passenger number as the burned one.

It was clean.

Clara took it from him.

The original tag had been removed after the plane landed.

The burned tag was a replacement.

Evan’s expression changed for less than a second.

Noah pointed toward the broken wheel lying near the belt.

A tiny red light blinked inside the cracked plastic housing.

May you like

Someone had hidden a memory device inside the suitcase wheel.

And Evan Mercer had just broken it open in front of everyone.
