Beneath the Baggage Belts

Chapter 09 - Beneath the Baggage Belts
The central baggage tunnel ran for two miles beneath the terminals.
Thousands of conveyor motors, scanners, and sorting gates filled the underground space.
Clara knew the service route better than any executive.
She led Lena, Michael, and airport police through maintenance doors while Noah remained with Margaret and Eleanor under guard.
The tunnels were silent.
Evan had shut down every belt.
At Junction C, they found a row of suitcases arranged across the floor. Each contained a motion sensor.
“Do not touch them,” Michael said.
Evan’s voice came through the overhead speakers.
“Clara always did believe damaged luggage mattered more than the people running the airport.”
Clara looked toward the cameras.
“You framed me because you knew I would inspect the suitcase.”
“I needed the wheel found.”
Michael understood.
Evan had deliberately thrown the bag hard enough to break the housing.
He wanted Clara to access the evidence trail and lead him to Eleanor’s archive.
The public humiliation was bait.
Evan had used Clara’s instinct for detail against her.
A conveyor started behind them.
The sensor bags moved toward the police.
Lena ordered everyone back.
Michael noticed the scanner lights.
The bags were not explosives. They were signal repeaters creating false movement across every security camera.
Evan was hiding one person among hundreds of digital ghosts.
Clara examined the belt controls.
One route remained powered: International Transfer 31.
The burned tag’s number.
317.
Hangar 317 had not been named for a building.
It was the route code to the archive.
They followed Belt 31 deeper underground.
At the end stood a steel door with a wheel-shaped lock.
May you like
The lock accepted the broken suitcase wheel.
Michael had built the key into Margaret’s bag.
