Eleanor’s Version

Chapter 08 - Eleanor’s Version
Eleanor entered the hospital wearing a dark green coat and no jewelry.
At seventy-six, she looked more like a retired professor than the architect of an airport network.
Margaret stood.
“You let us mourn you.”
Eleanor looked at her sister.
“I let Charles believe I had no family left to threaten.”
Clara had heard versions of that sentence from Michael.
Protection used as permission for absence.
Eleanor admitted saving Michael from the hangar but denied ordering the fire. She had spent decades collecting evidence against Charles while secretly controlling part of the network’s money.
“Why keep the operation running?” Lena asked.
“Because shutting it down would have scattered the people involved. Money gave me a map.”
“You also profited.”
“I preserved funds for restitution.”
Margaret opened Thomas’s notebook.
“My husband believed you became part of it.”
Eleanor’s face changed.
“Thomas believed morality remained clean if written in a notebook.”
She handed Lena a flash drive containing Charles’s original orders, customs payments, and video of Evan switching Margaret’s suitcase.
It could convict them.
In exchange, Eleanor wanted immunity.
Clara looked at Michael.
“Did you know?”
“He knew she had evidence,” Eleanor said. “Not where it came from.”
Michael did not defend himself.
Lena refused to promise immunity.
Eleanor smiled faintly.
“Then the airport will burn the archive before morning.”
The emergency archive was hidden beneath the international baggage system. It contained thirty years of recordings and transaction logs.
Evan had discovered its location.
His escape from Warehouse 9 was not flight.
It was a race to destroy the only evidence larger than his father.
The baggage belts across Northbridge stopped simultaneously.
Every arrivals screen turned black.
A message appeared:
SYSTEM MAINTENANCE.

Eleanor looked at Clara.
“That means Evan reached the central tunnel.”
