The Trial of the Mercers

Chapter 14 - The Trial of the Mercers

Evan and Charles were tried separately.

Charles’s attorneys argued age and illness made him unfit.

Medical experts disagreed.

He understood every charge and continued directing legal strategy from his hospital bed.

Evan blamed his father.

He admitted switching luggage and framing Clara but claimed Charles forced him from childhood to protect the family network.

The prosecution played footage from Warehouse 9.

Evan said:

“She will carry the burned tag.”

No father spoke those words for him.

Clara testified that coercion could explain a person without erasing choices.

Michael testified about the fire and lost years.

Samuel Price’s family attended.

For the first time, they learned where his body had been buried.

Charles showed no remorse.

Evan did.

It arrived unevenly, mixed with self-pity.

The jury convicted both men on fraud, conspiracy, attempted murder, evidence tampering, and multiple related charges.

Charles received life imprisonment.

Evan received forty-two years.

During sentencing, Evan looked at Noah.

“I never meant to involve a child.”

Noah held up the clean tag.

“You involved every child whose family lost something in that airport.”

The judge ordered the Mercer assets transferred into a restitution trust.
