The Hearing at Gate Forty

Chapter 12 - The Hearing at Gate Forty

Northbridge Airport held its emergency public hearing at Gate Forty because no meeting room could hold the families who arrived.

Passengers recognized jewelry, photographs, and documents recovered from the archive.

Some items belonged to people already dead.

The theft ring had taken more than property.

It interrupted inheritances, medical care, legal cases, and final goodbyes.

Clara sat beside Michael and Noah.

Evan appeared by video from custody.

Charles remained hospitalized under guard.

Eleanor testified in person.

She admitted controlling hidden accounts and using stolen money to preserve evidence. Prosecutors offered limited immunity in exchange for full cooperation and restitution.

Margaret spoke next.

Judge Ellis’s notebook proved he had spent his final years trying to expose the airport network.

His suitcase carried the last copy.

Then Clara testified about Carousel Six.

A board member asked why she immediately doubted the suitcase.

“Because people notice what they are expected to carry every day.”

She described the wrong zipper, the tape beneath the handle, and the broken wheel.

Details executives dismissed as baggage-worker knowledge had exposed the entire operation.

Noah presented the clean yellow tag.

“If the original had stayed under the carousel, my mom would have been blamed.”

Airport employees stood behind him.

Many had disciplinary records created by cloned access codes.

The authority voided the records and suspended every executive linked to the network.

Northbridge’s private baggage contractor was dissolved.

Workers received oversight seats.

No single executive could delete surveillance footage without an independent log.

Clara was offered the role of interim baggage director.

She accepted only after the job was opened to a public vote among staff and regulators.

She won.

Evan watched from the screen.

“You think changing titles changes people?”

Clara replied, “No. That is why the records no longer belong to one title.”
