Noah Meets His Father

Chapter 13 - Noah Meets His Father
Michael moved into a rehabilitation apartment near Clara and Noah.
He did not return home immediately.
Noah wanted him there.
Clara did not know whether she did.
They began with breakfast every Sunday.
Michael told Noah stories about the airport before automated scanners, when children received paper wings and baggage workers memorized three-letter city codes.
Noah listened, then asked harder questions.
“Did you stop trying to come back?”
“For a while.”
“Why?”
“I believed my memory would hurt you.”
“That was not your decision.”
“No.”
Michael had learned to answer without turning apologies into arguments.
Clara attended therapy with him.
Some sessions ended in silence.
Others ended with anger.
Love remained, but it had aged separately in two people.
Margaret visited often.
She brought photographs from Saint Matthew’s showing Michael learning to walk again.
Clara hated the pictures and treasured them.
Eleanor entered federal protective custody while helping investigators trace overseas accounts.
She wrote to Margaret.
Margaret did not answer.
Sisters could share truth without sharing forgiveness.
Noah kept the burned and clean tags in separate plastic sleeves.
One represented the story planted for them.
