The Wheel That Recorded Everything

Chapter 02 - The Wheel That Recorded Everything

Airport police sealed Carousel Six.

Detective Lena Ortiz placed the suitcase, broken wheel, and both baggage tags into separate evidence containers. Evan insisted the items belonged to airport security.

“They are part of an internal investigation,” he said.

“They are now part of mine,” Lena replied.

Clara stood behind the barrier while passengers filmed from a distance. Margaret Ellis refused to leave.

“My husband packed that suitcase himself before he died,” she said. “If this is not mine, where is the real one?”

Noah remained beside his mother.

He had come to the airport because Clara forgot her dinner. While waiting near the employee entrance, he saw a man in a gray maintenance coat crawl beneath Carousel Six.

The man removed one yellow tag and attached another.

Noah waited until he left, then climbed under the belt and found the discarded tag.

“Did you see his face?” Lena asked.

“No. But he wore a silver ring with a bird on it.”

Clara knew the ring.

Senior airport executives received one after ten years of service. Evan wore the same design.

Technicians opened the broken wheel.

Inside was a heat-resistant camera module and a microSD card. The lens had faced outward through a screw hole, recording everything near the suitcase.

The first video showed a cargo sorting room.

Margaret’s real suitcase rested on a table beside three identical blue cases.

A man moved valuables from passenger bags into black shipping crates.

Then Evan entered.

“Flight 218 closes the route,” he said. “After tonight, destroy the archive.”

Another voice replied, “What about Hayes?”

Evan looked directly toward the hidden camera.

“She will carry the burned tag.”

Clara’s knees weakened.

The recording continued.

A woman’s hand placed the camera wheel onto the duplicate suitcase.

On her wrist was a hospital bracelet.

Printed on it were the words:

MICHAEL HAYES — UNIDENTIFIED PATIENT.

Clara stared at the screen.

Her husband had been declared dead twelve years earlier.

Yet the bracelet had been issued six weeks ago.
