The Husband Who Came Back

Chapter 07 - The Husband Who Came Back
Clara saw Michael through the hospital glass before he saw her.
His hair had turned gray near the temples. Burn scars crossed the left side of his neck. He walked with a cane.
Noah stood beside her, trembling.
Michael looked toward them.
Recognition came slowly.
Then all at once.
“Clara.”
She crossed the room and struck him across the face.
The sound shocked everyone.
Then she pulled him into her arms.
Michael held her as if the years between them had weight.
Noah remained several feet away.
Michael looked at him.
“You were small enough to sleep on my chest.”
Noah’s eyes filled.
“You remembered that?”
“Three months ago.”
“Why didn’t you call?”
Michael lowered his head.
“Because the first number I called belonged to your mother’s old apartment. Two men arrived at the center within an hour.”
He believed the Mercers monitored Clara.
Margaret helped him build a plan using the wheel camera and Judge Ellis’s notebook.
The black suitcase Michael carried contained copies of rehabilitation records, financial transfers, and photographs of Eleanor Mercer visiting him.
Eleanor was alive.
She had rescued Michael from Hangar 317 after discovering Charles intended to kill him. She placed Samuel Price’s body with Michael’s identification to make Evan stop searching.
Then she moved Michael between private clinics.
“Why hide him from his family?” Clara asked.
Michael answered before Margaret could.
“Because Eleanor used me too.”
She kept him alive as insurance against Charles.
When his memory returned, she offered a choice: remain hidden or watch Clara and Noah become targets.
He stayed.
Love and fear had become the same locked room.
The hospital lights flickered.
Michael looked toward the window.
“They found me.”
A black airport shuttle stopped outside.

Its doors opened.
Eleanor Mercer stepped onto the pavement.
