Eleanor’s Final Account

Chapter 16 - Eleanor’s Final Account
Eleanor completed her cooperation agreement at seventy-eight.
She surrendered all hidden funds and gave investigators the names of officials she bribed or monitored.
Before entering a federal witness program, she requested one meeting with Margaret.
They sat in an empty airport chapel.
Eleanor explained that Charles threatened both sisters after she discovered the network. She chose disappearance because she believed staying would make Margaret a target.
Margaret listened.
“You also chose the accounts.”
“Yes.”
“You chose power.”
“Yes.”
“Did you ever plan to come back?”
Eleanor looked toward the chapel window.
“I planned to come back when the evidence was complete.”
“It never becomes complete.”
“No.”
Margaret did not forgive her.
She gave Eleanor a photograph of them as children.
“So you remember who paid for your safety.”
Eleanor accepted it.
Her final account led to one last discovery.
A hidden terminal fund had paid Northbridge executives to manipulate baggage security long after the Mercers were removed.
The network’s method had outlived the family.
Clara helped build safeguards around systems rather than personalities.
