Clara’s First Decision

Chapter 17 - Clara’s First Decision

As elected baggage director, Clara faced her first crisis when a new automated sorting system misrouted six hundred bags during a holiday storm.

Airline executives urged her to blame weather.

She refused.

The system had been launched without enough testing because contractors wanted a performance bonus.

Clara published the failure report within four hours.

She opened the baggage area to independent inspectors and paid affected passengers from the contractor’s bond.

Some board members called her reckless.

Passenger trust rose.

Employees reported problems earlier because honesty no longer ended careers.

Noah watched his mother address reporters at Carousel Six.

She wore an executive badge now.

The orange vest remained over her suit.

“Why keep it?” a journalist asked.

“Because a title should not make me forget who touches the bags.”

Michael stood at the edge of the crowd.

He smiled.

Clara saw him and smiled back.

Their marriage was not restored by a verdict.

It rebuilt itself through ordinary decisions.

That night, Michael returned home with one suitcase.

No cameras.

No secret compartments.

Clara checked the tag anyway.
