Elise Returns to the Maternity Wing

Chapter 13 - Elise Returns to the Maternity Wing

Elise visited the original maternity wing after completing rehabilitation.

The fire-damaged corridor had been restored years earlier and renamed for Richard Sloan.

Samuel ordered the name removed.

Elise objected to replacing it with hers.

“No person should own the memory of patients.”

The wing became the Patient Identity Center.

Its mission was to investigate altered birth, death, and guardianship records.

Elise served as an adviser, not director.

She wanted no automatic authority because of what happened to her.

Grace joined her beneath the old founder’s camera.

“Do you remember leaving with me?” Grace asked.

“Pieces.”

“Do you remember raising me?”

“More every day.”

Elise apologized for living under another name and never telling Grace about Saint Alden.

Grace answered honestly.

“You were hiding from people who controlled records. I understand. I am still angry.”

Elise nodded.

Their relationship could contain both.

They walked the corridor slowly.

Every patient-room door now carried an independent call system that could not be disabled from inside the hospital network.

The lesson had become architecture.
