Grace Chooses Her Name

Chapter 16 - Grace Chooses Her Name

Grace’s original birth certificate identified her as Grace Elise Bennett.

Her later records used Grace Ellen Gray.

Marriage changed her name to Grace Hale.

Three names carried three versions of her life.

A court offered to correct every record to Bennett.

Grace declined a complete replacement.

She chose Grace Bennett Hale for legal use while keeping Gray in a private family archive.

“Why keep Hale?” Elise asked.

“Clara is a Hale too. I will not teach her that a name becomes contaminated forever because one person failed.”

“Why Bennett?”

“Because it was erased.”

“Why not Gray?”

Grace smiled.

“Gray raised me. It does not need government ink to remain real.”

Identity no longer had to be one official answer.

The court sealed the fraudulent records but preserved copies for Grace and investigators.
