The Lodge in Daniel’s Name

Chapter 06 - The Lodge in Daniel’s Name
The Hale Maternity Research Lodge stood beside a private lake two hours from the city.
Daniel purchased the property as part of the Saint Alden transaction. Victoria described it as an unused staff-training center.
Police entered under warrant.
The upper floors were empty.
The basement held six patient rooms, a medication cabinet, and surveillance equipment connected to Saint Alden.
One room contained a silver-haired woman seated near the window.
She wore a hospital bracelet marked E-17.
Grace entered slowly.
The woman looked at her without recognition.
Then Grace began humming the lullaby her mother sang when storms kept them awake.
Elise turned.
“Gracie?”
Grace crossed the room.
Mother and daughter held each other while Samuel stood in the doorway, crying openly.
Elise remembered her family, but years of medication had damaged parts of her memory.
Victoria moved her to the lodge after learning Grace was pregnant.
She needed Elise alive long enough to sign away the founder’s shares.
When Elise refused, Victoria prepared to use Grace’s bracelet instead.
Daniel examined the property records.
His signature appeared on the authorization allowing medical occupancy.
It was genuine.
Six months earlier, Victoria presented the document as a permit for employee housing.
Daniel had signed without reading the patient-use schedule.
Grace looked at him.
“How many times can you say you did not know before not knowing becomes a choice?”
Daniel lowered his eyes.
Elise answered for him.
“Power often survives because the person signing prefers speed to questions.”

Daniel could not repair the past with anger at Victoria.
He would have to account for every door his signature opened.
