The Camera Above the Bed

Chapter 02 - The Camera Above the Bed
Nurses helped Grace onto the bed and checked her carefully.
Her condition was stable. The baby’s heartbeat remained strong. Dr. Samuel ordered continuous observation and barred Victoria from the maternity floor.
Victoria demanded that security arrest Grace for trespassing.
Samuel ignored her.
Instead, he pointed toward a small black lens above the bed.
Saint Alden’s modern surveillance network did not cover patient rooms, but the old founder’s system contained independent safety cameras activated only during a patient distress alarm.
Grace had pressed the alarm beneath the bed before Victoria took her phone.
The camera recorded the entire confrontation.
Victoria pinning the blanket.
The demand for the bracelet.
The forged annulment agreement.
The lie that Grace attacked first.
Daniel watched the footage without speaking.
Grace saw shame arrive slowly across his face.
For months, she had warned him that Victoria was interfering with her medical records and marriage. Daniel believed Victoria’s claim that the behavior was part of a confidential hospital merger.
He had trusted a former lover’s authority over his wife’s fear.
Samuel asked to examine the bracelet.
Grace allowed him to hold it but not remove it from the room.
A tiny metal tab opened beneath the moon symbol.
Inside was a key no larger than a grain of rice.
Samuel recognized it.
His sister Elise created two such keys before the hospital’s maternity-wing fire twenty-eight years earlier.
One remained in the hospital archive.
The second vanished with Elise and her newborn daughter.
Grace’s birth certificate named her mother as Ellen Bennett, a hotel cleaner who died when Grace was eleven.
Samuel studied the name.
“Elise used Ellen when she wanted to disappear.”
Grace looked at him.
“My mother was alive until I was eleven.”
Samuel sat down.
His family had been told Elise and her baby died during the Saint Alden fire.
If Grace was telling the truth, someone had falsified two deaths and rewritten an entire childhood.
Victoria stood behind the security officers.
“This proves nothing.”
The camera turned toward her automatically.
A red light began blinking.

The old system had recognized the bracelet.
And somewhere beneath the hospital, a sealed archive had just unlocked.
