Daniel’s Contract

Chapter 04 - Daniel’s Contract
Daniel Hale had built a billion-dollar investment firm by buying failing companies and restructuring them.
Saint Alden was supposed to be his most respected acquisition.
Victoria showed him clean financial reports, rising patient numbers, and expansion plans for three underserved counties.
She did not show him the hidden debt.
The hospital network had lost hundreds of millions through shell charities and falsified insurance claims.
Daniel’s purchase funds would cover the missing money before regulators discovered it.
His contract contained a private clause.
If the acquisition failed because of a claim made by Daniel’s spouse, Victoria’s board could seize collateral from his company.
That collateral included the apartment Grace owned before marriage and the trust established for their unborn child.
Daniel had signed the clause without telling her.
“I thought it was standard risk protection,” he said.
Grace looked at him from the hospital bed.
“You put my home and our baby’s trust inside a deal with your former lover.”
“I did not understand what she was doing.”
“You understood enough not to show me.”
Daniel had no answer.
Samuel ordered a complete review of every document Victoria gave him.
A handwriting expert examined Grace’s supposed consent to the acquisition.
The signature was forged.
The biometric approval came from a tablet Daniel had taken from their home after Grace became pregnant.
Victoria claimed he needed it for insurance registration.
Daniel had handed her the device.
He had not planned the fraud.
He had created access through carelessness and secrecy.
Grace told him to leave the room.
He obeyed.
Outside, Victoria approached him.
“We can still close the acquisition if Grace is declared incompetent.”
Daniel stared at her.
She had stopped pretending.
“Stay away from my wife.”
Victoria smiled.

“You did not protect her when believing her was inconvenient. Do not act heroic now.”
The truth hurt because part of it belonged to him.
