Samuel’s Resignation

Chapter 14 - Samuel’s Resignation

Samuel resigned as director of Saint Alden.

Employees asked him to stay through the transition.

He declined.

“I spent twenty-eight years believing grief excused my failure to investigate.”

The new governing council offered him a clinical teaching role.

He accepted after the council defined clear limits.

Samuel taught young physicians about institutional pressure, documentation, and the danger of confusing authority with truth.

He also began rebuilding his relationship with Elise.

Their first conversations were difficult.

She blamed him for signing her death declaration.

He blamed himself more than she did.

Elise eventually told him that endless guilt still centered his feelings.

“What do you need from me?” he asked.

“Listen when I describe what happened without turning it into your punishment.”

He learned.

Brother and sister began meeting weekly for coffee away from the hospital.
