The Guardianship Hearing

Chapter 12 - The Guardianship Hearing
The family court hearing lasted four days.
Vanessa sought emergency custody, arguing that Jonathan’s guilt made him unreliable and Amelia’s presence confused Oliver.
The child’s advocate presented Oliver’s own preferences.
He wanted to live with his father.
He wanted Amelia to remain in his life.
He did not want Vanessa present during medical or school decisions.
The judge interviewed him privately.
Oliver did not use dramatic language.
He described locked doors, missed calls, medicine that made him sleepy, and the rule that Claire’s name could not be spoken during dinner.
Vanessa’s attorney asked whether he loved his stepmother.
Oliver said yes.
The answer unsettled the room.
Then he added:
“I love her, but I don’t feel safe when she decides what happened before I tell it.”
The judge denied Vanessa’s petition.
Miriam Sloan was appointed temporary trust supervisor.
Amelia’s protector role was recognized.
Jonathan retained parental custody under independent oversight and mandatory family therapy.
