Jonathan’s Testimony

Chapter 14 - Jonathan’s Testimony

Jonathan testified before the criminal grand jury and later at trial.

Vanessa’s attorney asked why he had not noticed Amelia’s resemblance to Claire.

“I saw a household employee,” he said. “I did not study her face long enough.”

The answer exposed more than he intended.

Amelia had worked under his roof for eleven months. She managed Oliver’s bedtime, school bag, meals, and nightmares.

Jonathan thanked her regularly without knowing her.

Privilege had taught him that service could be familiar without becoming personal.

The attorney asked whether Amelia wanted access to Oliver’s fortune.

Jonathan answered:

“She had legal authority before taking the job and used none of it for herself.”

“Did she encourage your son to call her Mom?”

“No.”

“How can you know?”

“Because every recording shows her correcting him until the gala.”

Amelia had repeatedly said:

I am Aunt Amelia.

Oliver always answered:

You feel like Mom too.

Jonathan cried while hearing the audio.

He had once feared the word erased Claire.

Now he understood it honored what Claire had chosen.
