Claire’s Last Appointment

Chapter 03 - Claire’s Last Appointment

Claire Reed died in a highway accident four years earlier.

The police report said heavy rain caused her car to cross the center line.

Jonathan accepted the conclusion because the alternative required questions he did not know how to survive.

Claire had spent her final month arguing with the Reed Children’s Trust. She wanted to restructure Oliver’s inheritance and remove several family directors. Jonathan believed grief after her father’s death had made her suspicious.

Vanessa had been the trust’s outside family consultant.

She helped Jonathan manage the estate after Claire died.

She organized Oliver’s medical care, school records, and household schedule.

A year later, Jonathan married her.

Amelia presented a different timeline.

Claire’s final appointment had not been with a grief counselor.

It had been with trust attorney Miriam Sloan.

Claire discovered that money from Oliver’s protected inheritance was being moved into shell companies linked to Vanessa’s brother, Lucas Vale. She planned to expose the transfers at a board meeting on Monday.

She died Sunday night.

Before leaving for that final drive, Claire sent Amelia three items:

The locket.

A sealed letter.

And a notarized appointment naming Amelia independent protector of Oliver’s trust if Claire died before he turned eighteen.

“Where is the appointment?” Jonathan asked.

“Not in this house.”

Vanessa folded her arms.

“Because it does not exist.”

Amelia looked at her.

“You searched my room this afternoon.”

Oliver lifted his head.

“I saw her.”

Vanessa stared at him.

The child continued.

“She took the blue envelope.”

Jonathan looked toward the security director.

“Lock the exterior doors. Nobody leaves with documents.”

The charity gala transformed instantly.

Guests who had arrived to praise Reed Family Holdings now stood inside a potential crime scene.

Vanessa’s attorney, who had been seated near the stage, approached quietly.

“Jonathan, public accusations will damage Oliver.”

Jonathan looked at his son trembling against the woman he had called a housekeeper.

“What damaged him happened before the accusation.”
