Why Oliver Chose the Word Mom

Chapter 05 - Why Oliver Chose the Word Mom
Jonathan asked Oliver privately why he called Amelia his mother.
They sat in the small music room with a child advocate present. Amelia waited outside because she did not want to influence his answer.
Oliver swung his polished shoes above the carpet.
“When I wake up scared, Amelia comes.”
“Why don’t you call me?”
“You’re working.”
“What about Vanessa?”
“She says nightmares are choices.”
Jonathan closed his eyes.
Oliver continued.
Amelia remembered how Claire sang before bed. She knew which stuffed bear Oliver kept hidden after Vanessa said he was too old for it. She sat outside his bedroom when he was punished from speaking. She saved drawings Vanessa threw away.
“Did Amelia ask you to call her Mom?”
“No.”
“Has she told you she is your mother?”
“No.”
“Then why that word?”
Oliver thought for a long time.
“Because when something hurts, she believes me first.”
Jonathan looked through the glass door.
Amelia stood in the hallway with both hands clasped tightly in front of her uniform.
She was not Oliver’s biological mother.
She was not trying to replace Claire.
The child had chosen the word for the person who performed the meaning.
Jonathan felt grief, gratitude, and shame arrive together.
He had loved Oliver.
He paid attention in large gestures—schools, birthdays, vacations, medical specialists.
He missed the daily architecture of safety.
Vanessa managed the house.
Jonathan accepted her reports.
