The Woman Claire Erased to Protect

Chapter 02 - The Woman Claire Erased to Protect
Vanessa recovered first.
She signaled to security.
“Remove this woman from the house.”
Jonathan turned toward the guards.
“Stay where you are.”
The order stopped them.
Amelia rose slowly with Oliver still clinging to her. She did not look triumphant. She looked like someone whose safest lie had just ended in the worst possible room.
Vanessa pointed at the locket.
“She planted that. She has been manipulating a grieving child.”
Oliver tightened his arms.
“She didn’t give it to me. I found it behind the drawer.”
Jonathan took the locket.
Claire’s face was unmistakable. She appeared twenty-three or twenty-four, years before they met. Beside her stood a dark-haired young woman with the same eyes and the same narrow smile.
“Who are you?” he asked.
“Amelia Hart is my legal name. Claire and I had the same father.”
Jonathan remembered fragments.
Claire’s father had left when she was young.
There had been another family.
Whenever he asked, Claire changed the subject.
Amelia explained that the sisters met as adults after finding one another through their father’s estate. Claire kept the relationship private because the Reed family’s attorneys were fighting a patent claim connected to their father’s company.
Vanessa laughed sharply.
“A secret sister conveniently appears as household staff.”
“I did not come for the salary.”
“Then why did you come?”
Amelia looked toward Oliver.
“Because Claire asked me to.”
The ballroom guests leaned closer without moving.
Jonathan lowered his voice.
“Claire died four years ago.”
“She gave me instructions before she died.”
Vanessa stepped between them.
“This is neither the time nor the place.”
Amelia answered.
“You chose the time when you arranged for Oliver to be humiliated in front of the foundation trustees.”
Jonathan looked toward the guest tables.
Seven members of the Reed Children’s Trust board sat in the front row.
The gala had been scheduled the night before an emergency vote concerning Oliver’s inheritance.
Vanessa had told him the timing was unavoidable.
Now every detail changed shape.
Oliver whispered into Amelia’s shoulder.
“She said they’re sending me to Hartwell Academy tomorrow.”
Jonathan looked at Vanessa.
“Hartwell is a residential behavioral school.”
“He needs structure.”
“You told me it was a summer program.”
Vanessa’s expression tightened.
“The therapist believes separation from unhealthy attachments may help.”
Amelia held Oliver closer.
“What unhealthy attachment?”
May you like
Vanessa looked directly at her.
“You.”
