The Money Behind Hartwell Academy

Chapter 08 - The Money Behind Hartwell Academy

Hartwell Academy advertised therapeutic education for children with behavioral challenges.

Its campus occupied a renovated estate three states away.

Vanessa had reserved Oliver’s place six months earlier.

The tuition deposit came from the Reed Children’s Trust.

The academy’s parent company was owned through a chain of LLCs linked to Lucas Vale.

Vanessa’s brother.

If Oliver entered Hartwell, trust money would pay Lucas nearly two hundred thousand dollars each year. More importantly, the academy agreement allowed educational guardians to restrict family contact, approve medication, and describe progress in confidential reports.

Vanessa could control Oliver’s access to Jonathan and generate years of evidence supporting continued guardianship.

The boy would become both income and proof.

Jonathan read the enrollment contract until the words blurred.

“I almost put him on that plane.”

Amelia answered.

“You believed it was a six-week program.”

“I believed because the explanation helped me leave for Singapore.”

Jonathan did not ask her to soften the truth.

The merger trip mattered to him.

Vanessa used that fact.

But she did not create it.
