The Housekeeper’s Real Job

Chapter 06 - The Housekeeper’s Real Job
Amelia had entered Reed House as a housekeeper because every professional route was blocked.
After Claire’s death, she contacted Jonathan through attorneys. Her letters were returned. Phone calls went unanswered. A trust representative told her the protector appointment had been revoked.
It had not.
Vanessa had intercepted everything.
Amelia challenged the trust privately. The family court required evidence that Oliver faced an actual conflict of interest. Financial irregularities alone were not enough because the trustees claimed clerical error.
So Amelia took a job inside the household under her legal surname.
Vanessa did not recognize her.
Claire and Amelia shared a father but had different mothers and different childhoods. Few public photographs existed.
Amelia began documenting.
Oliver’s meals withheld as punishment.
Therapy notes written without sessions.
Calls from his maternal grandparents blocked.
Medication given before trustee visits to make him appear quiet and detached.
She never administered the medication herself.
She photographed every label.
The prescription was a mild sedative approved for occasional travel anxiety.
Vanessa ordered it nightly.
Jonathan stared at the pharmacy log.
He had signed the initial consent after being told Oliver panicked on flights.
He never reviewed the refills.
“I signed this.”
“Yes.”
“You could have shown me.”
“I tried.”
The answer contained no accusation.
That made it worse.
Amelia’s evidence filled two encrypted drives hidden outside the house. She planned to present them at the morning hearing.
The gala forced her to reveal herself early.
“Were you ever going to tell Oliver who you were?” Jonathan asked.
“When the court allowed it and when he could choose the relationship without fear.”
“He already chose.”

Amelia looked toward the music room.
“Yes.”
