The Trial of Vanessa Reed

Chapter 15 - The Trial of Vanessa Reed

Vanessa and Lucas faced charges including trust fraud, medical-record falsification, obstruction, attempted guardianship fraud, and conspiracy connected to Claire’s death.

The prosecution began with the gala video.

The spill.

The accusation.

The child running.

The embrace.

The word “Mom.”

Then came the reports written before the incident.

Pharmacists testified about the sedative.

Hartwell executives described payments.

Staff members explained intercepted calls and discarded drawings.

Amelia testified about Claire’s instructions and her year inside the house.

Vanessa’s attorney called her obsessed.

Amelia agreed.

“I was obsessed with making sure a child’s reality existed somewhere outside the person controlling the file.”

The jury convicted Vanessa and Lucas on every financial and guardianship count.

The evidence connected them to drugging Claire but could not establish beyond reasonable doubt who administered the final dose. They were convicted of conspiracy, evidence destruction, and reckless endangerment rather than murder.

Vanessa received twenty-six years.

Lucas received twenty-two.

At sentencing, Vanessa said she loved Oliver.

Amelia believed her.

Jonathan may have believed her too.
