Amelia resigned from domestic employment.
She continued as Oliver’s trust protector and began working with a nonprofit supporting children involved in inheritance and guardianship disputes.
The gray uniform entered a box in her apartment.
Oliver asked why she stopped wearing it.
“Because that was my job.”
“But you still take care of me.”
“That is not a job.”
He thought carefully.
“Can I still call you Mom?”
Amelia knelt so they were eye level.
“You can call me what feels true. You never have to call me something to make me stay.”
Oliver hugged her.
“Aunt Mom?”
She laughed.
“That is legally confusing.”
He used both names for years.
Sometimes Amelia.
Sometimes Aunt Amelia.
