Claire’s Recorded Warning

Chapter 09 - Claire’s Recorded Warning
The trust attorney opened a safe-deposit box Claire had maintained under Amelia’s name.
Inside was a video.
Claire sat in her home office wearing the blue sweater Jonathan remembered from the week before her death.
“If you are watching this,” she began, “someone has tried to turn Oliver’s inheritance into a reason he cannot be trusted.”
Claire explained the shell-company transfers and Vanessa’s role as consultant. She had not yet concluded Vanessa was committing fraud, but she believed Lucas was.
Then she spoke about Jonathan.
“He loves our son. He also loves being useful to everyone at once. That makes him easy to redirect. Give him a crisis with numbers and he will miss the quieter emergency beside him.”
Jonathan paused the video.
Amelia waited.
Claire continued.
“I am naming Amelia protector because she is the only person I know who will disagree with Jonathan without wanting his power.”
She described the sisters’ reconciliation and the reason she kept Amelia private. The Reed family’s patent litigation had involved their father’s estate. Publicly connecting Amelia could have endangered both women’s claims.
The final minutes changed the investigation.
Claire said Vanessa offered her a drink after a difficult trust meeting.
“I became dizzy driving home last week. The doctor called it stress. I am recording this because I am no longer certain.”
Toxicology from Claire’s fatal crash had shown a sedative.
The amount was described as therapeutic.
