Ten Seconds Until Midnight

Chapter 01 - Ten Seconds Until Midnight
The boy in the gray hoodie arrived at the most expensive party in Los Angeles carrying a black backpack and no invitation.
Music rolled across the glass-walled mansion above the city. Blue light shimmered across the infinity pool. Models, athletes, and young executives crowded the terrace while phones recorded everything worth envying.
Damon Cross noticed the stranger immediately.
Damon was twenty-eight, muscular, rich-looking, and famous online for videos about discipline, power, and “earning your place.” He wore an open black shirt, gold chain, tailored trousers, and the confident smile of a man who believed every room had been built to display him.
He stepped in front of the boy.
“Delivery entrance is downstairs.”
The crowd laughed.
The boy looked eighteen or nineteen. His brown hair fell across tired eyes. A simple silver watch showed beneath the sleeve of his hoodie. He kept both backpack straps over his shoulders and did not lower his gaze.
“I’m not delivering anything.”
Damon lifted a red party cup.
“Then you’re trespassing.”
Several guests raised their phones. A humiliation was beginning, and nobody wanted to miss the useful part.
The boy glanced toward the mansion’s upper floor, then the pool, then the city beyond the glass railing.
“My name is Ethan Hale,” he said.
The name produced no reaction.
Damon smiled wider.
“Congratulations.”
Ethan checked his watch.
11:59:50.
Damon noticed and laughed.
“Waiting for your bus?”
“No.”
Ethan pressed one finger against the watch’s black face.
“I’m waiting for this house to remember who owns it.”
The music stopped.
Every exterior light flashed once.
The glass doors locked behind the crowd with a soft electronic click. The blue pool lights changed to white. Across the mansion, security screens awakened and displayed a simple compass symbol with no readable words.
Damon’s smile disappeared.
Ethan watched the final seconds pass.
Five.
Four.
Three.
A woman near the pool whispered, “What is happening?”
Two.
One.
At midnight, the mansion’s central system spoke in a calm artificial voice.
“Founder authorization restored.”

Ethan looked at Damon.
“Your party is over.”
