Chapter 10 - The Flight Data
Samuel Ortiz’s second copy changed the case.
The module in Ethan’s black case proved an unauthorized command disabled the aircraft’s navigation backup. The second copy included network routing records.
The command passed through a Northstar server located inside Malcolm’s private office.
Malcolm’s defense argued remote hackers could have used the system.
Then Mara found an access video preserved by Adrian’s original architecture.
At 4:13 a.m. on the day of the crash, Malcolm entered the server room with Northstar security chief Victor Shaw.
Victor watched the video in the mansion library.
His face collapsed.
He had spent sixteen years serving the Cross family because Malcolm told him Adrian died after attempting to flee with stolen company data. Victor believed helping suppress the Hale trust protected Northstar employees.
The video showed something else.
Victor had carried a diagnostic device into the server room.
“I didn’t know it controlled the plane,” he said.
Mara asked who gave the order.
“Malcolm.”
Victor agreed to cooperate.
Damon heard about the confession from his attorney. He refused to believe it until Victor repeated the statement directly.
“You raised me,” Damon said.
Victor looked ashamed.
“I helped raise you inside a lie.”
The evidence did not yet prove Malcolm intended the plane to crash. He could claim the command was designed to force an emergency landing.
But internal messages revealed Adrian planned to expose fraud that morning. Malcolm transferred money offshore hours after the crash. He then filed emergency papers claiming Adrian left no verified heir.
Motive, mechanism, benefit.
The pattern became difficult to call coincidence.
Federal investigators reopened Adrian’s death.
Ethan stood alone near the infinity pool after hearing the news. The city stretched below, beautiful and indifferent.
He had wanted proof that his mother was not paranoid.
He had not prepared for proof that his father was killed.
Mara joined him.
“Justice will take time.”
Ethan looked at the silver watch.
“My mother didn’t have any left.”
No legal victory could return Claire to the mansion or Adrian to the plane.
