The Black Case

Chapter 05 - The Black Case
The black case required Ethan’s fingerprint and the watch.
Inside were three objects.
A handwritten letter.
A flight recorder memory module.
A photograph of Malcolm Cross standing beside Adrian’s plane hours before the crash.
The photograph came from Claire.
The memory module came from a mechanic named Samuel Ortiz.
Samuel had contacted Claire eleven years after the crash. He worked at the private airport and saw Malcolm’s security chief enter the aircraft maintenance bay. When the plane went down, Samuel copied diagnostic data before the official investigation seized the system.
He hid the module.
Years later, facing illness, he gave it to Claire.
The data showed an unauthorized software command disabled the aircraft’s navigation redundancy nine minutes after takeoff. The command originated from a Northstar executive device registered to Malcolm.
It was not complete proof of murder.
It was enough to reopen the crash.
Damon stared at the module.
“My father wasn’t even in California.”
Ethan placed the photograph beside it.
“He was at the airport.”
“That could be any day.”
“The time stamp is embedded in the original file.”
Damon looked toward Victor.
The estate manager said nothing.
Ethan unfolded Adrian’s letter.
Son,
If you are reading this, I failed to keep power from becoming inheritance. Do not take Northstar because you share my blood. Take responsibility only if you are willing to make ownership smaller than truth.
Ethan stopped reading.
The letter was not a crown.
It was a warning.
A woman in a black dress near the pool lowered her phone. She worked for a financial magazine and recognized the legal significance. If the trust activation was valid, every recent Northstar deal could be frozen.
Damon recognized her reaction.
He took one step toward the case.
Ethan closed it.
“Don’t touch it.”
Damon’s voice dropped.
“You walked into my home, embarrassed me in front of everyone, and accused my father of murder.”
Ethan looked around the mansion.
“This was never your home.”
The words struck harder than shouting.
Damon’s friends became suddenly interested in the skyline.

The party had been built around his ownership.
Now every light reflected a lie.
