The New Northstar

Chapter 19 - The New Northstar
Northstar Systems survived the scandal by becoming smaller.
The trust council sold surveillance divisions Adrian had opposed. Employee representatives gained board seats. Patents taken from engineers were restored or shared. Customer data practices became public.
Profits fell.
Trust increased.
Ethan accepted one non-executive seat after completing independent training. He had no unilateral authority and could be removed for conflicts like anyone else.
Reporters called him the reluctant heir.
He disliked the phrase.
Reluctance could become another form of branding.
At his first board meeting, an older director called him “young Mr. Hale” and began explaining the company history.
Ethan stopped him.
“Dr. Park was there. Let her explain.”
Lena Park described Northstar before Adrian became famous: the arguments, shared designs, mistakes, and people marketing erased.
The company’s founding story changed from two brilliant men to hundreds of workers.
Adrian remained important.
He stopped being alone at the center.
Damon eventually joined no board. He opened a modest training program for young athletes focused on financial literacy and online exploitation. He funded it transparently and refused to use the Cross name in the title.
People debated whether he deserved another chance.
Ethan did not decide for them.
That was not his role.
The silver watch remained on his wrist.

Not because it made him owner.
Because it reminded him that a countdown ended one kind of inheritance and began another.
