Adrian Hale’s Last Watch

Chapter 03 - Adrian Hale’s Last Watch

Adrian Hale built the silver watch himself.

It looked ordinary because he believed valuable technology became safest when arrogance found it boring. Beneath the steel bracelet was a biometric key linked to Northstar’s original trust, patents, and physical properties.

Only two people had ever worn it.

Adrian.

Then Ethan.

Ethan’s mother, Claire Hale, kept the watch hidden inside a flour tin for sixteen years. They moved seven times. She changed jobs whenever strangers began asking questions. She never told Ethan the full story until cancer made secrecy more dangerous than truth.

Three weeks before her death, Claire placed the watch in his palm.

“Your father knew Malcolm would try to take the company,” she said.

Ethan had grown up believing Adrian was a brilliant inventor killed by bad weather and mechanical failure. Malcolm Cross appeared in documentaries every anniversary, describing Adrian as a brother. Northstar scholarships carried Adrian’s name while Malcolm controlled the fortune.

Claire told a different story.

Adrian discovered that Malcolm diverted research funds, sold private customer data, and negotiated military surveillance contracts Adrian refused to approve. He planned to remove Malcolm from Northstar.

The plane crashed the next morning.

Claire suspected sabotage but had no proof.

Then Malcolm arrived at the hospital where she had just given birth.

He offered protection.

In exchange, Ethan would remain unrecognized until age nineteen. Malcolm claimed publicity would place the child in danger. Claire signed temporary documents while medicated and grieving.

Temporary became sixteen years.

Malcolm’s attorneys declared there was no verified heir.

Claire’s letters disappeared.

Ethan’s birth records were sealed.

The trust remained under Cross control.

But Adrian had anticipated betrayal.

If his child reached nineteen and activated the watch at an original Northstar property, ownership records would unlock automatically and freeze every trustee transaction pending review.

The mansion was the only original property Malcolm had not demolished.

He kept it because he loved telling people he designed it.

Claire knew better.

“Go there at midnight,” she told Ethan.

“Why not a courthouse?”

“Because courts can debate paper.”

She closed his fingers around the watch.

“The house knew your father.”
