The Guests Who Suddenly Remembered

Chapter 07 - The Guests Who Suddenly Remembered

People began remembering things.

A venture capitalist remembered Malcolm discussing a “lost Hale child” after too much wine.

A former Northstar engineer remembered being ordered to remove Adrian’s authentication system.

A model at the party remembered Damon joking that his father bought silence more efficiently than lawyers.

A journalist remembered an unpublished interview with Claire that disappeared after her editor received pressure.

Memory became fashionable once power changed sides.

Ethan disliked it immediately.

During humiliation, nobody intervened.

After recognition, everyone wanted to become a witness.

A guest named Lily Grant approached him. She had filmed Damon mocking him from the first moment.

“I have the whole video,” she said.

“So do fifty people.”

“Mine started before you arrived.”

The recording showed Victor opening the gate remotely after the system recognized Ethan’s watch. It proved Ethan did not trespass. More importantly, it captured Damon telling security to “make the poor kid disappear” before learning his name.

Lily offered the file without asking for payment.

Ethan studied her.

“Why didn’t you say anything?”

She looked embarrassed.

“Because I thought recording counted as helping.”

It did not.

But the video mattered.

Ethan accepted a copy and told her to preserve the original.

Across the terrace, guests deleted photos showing themselves laughing. The mansion server had already stored the livestream.

Damon watched reputations rearrange around him.

He turned on his friends.

“You all knew this was a setup.”

Nobody answered.

Damon had built loyalty from access. Once access disappeared, so did the loyalty.

Ethan could have enjoyed the reversal.

Instead, he felt tired.

His mother had died three weeks earlier. His birthday began among strangers who saw either a poor intruder or a secret billionaire, never the frightened son carrying a dead woman’s evidence.

Mara noticed.

“You don’t have to finish tonight.”

Ethan looked toward Malcolm outside, Damon near the pool, and the black case on the table.

“Yes,” he said. “I do.”

Not because the crowd deserved an ending.

Because Claire had spent sixteen years waiting for one.
