Claire’s Room

Chapter 18 - Claire’s Room
The mansion contained a room Adrian designed for Claire.
Malcolm had kept it locked and used it for document storage. The audit team opened it after the trial.
Inside were architecture sketches, fabric samples, and a wall of photographs showing modest homes, libraries, gardens, and public courtyards. Adrian and Claire had planned to make the estate partly accessible for research retreats.
A small desk held an unfinished letter.
Claire,
Malcolm thinks houses prove success. I think a house proves only what it lets people do inside it.
Ethan sat in the room for hours.
His mother had never seen it completed.
He imagined showing her the view, the pool, and the city lights. She would have criticized the waste, opened every window, and asked why the kitchen was so far from the garden.
Ethan brought one object from their apartment: the flour tin where she hid the watch.
He placed it on the desk.
No plaque.
No display case.
No explanation.
The ordinary object told the story better than gold.
Later, Damon entered with permission.
He saw the tin.
“That held the key?”
“Yes.”
Damon laughed softly.
“My father had teams searching banks and vaults.”
“My mother baked bread.”
The contrast felt almost like justice.
Almost.
Ethan turned Claire’s room into a quiet library for families using the center. No donor naming rights were allowed.

The room belonged to the people inside it.
Just as Adrian intended.
