What Blood Could Not Decide

Chapter 14 - What Blood Could Not Decide

The paternity rumor reached the press within hours.

Malcolm denied leaking it.

Nobody believed him.

Commentators asked whether Ethan remained the “real heir.” Investors demanded genetic confirmation. Strangers enlarged photographs of Ethan and Adrian, measuring jawlines as if family could be solved through pixels.

Ethan refused a public DNA test.

The trust documents contained a declaration signed by Adrian before the crash. Claire had told him about the pregnancy. Adrian acknowledged the child as his legal and intended heir regardless of biological testing.

That settled the law.

It did not settle public hunger.

Damon surprised everyone by defending Ethan.

In a live interview, he said, “I spent my life assuming blood made me entitled to Northstar. Look where that got us.”

The clip spread widely.

Some called it redemption.

Others called it strategy.

Both could be partly true.

Ethan visited Claire’s grave.

He carried the watch but left it in his pocket. He spoke aloud because silence had shaped enough of their family.

“I don’t know whether Dad was my biological father.”

Wind moved through the cemetery grass.

“I know you wanted me safe.”

He placed Adrian’s letter beside the stone and read the line again.

Do not take Northstar because you share my blood.

Adrian had anticipated the question.

He had built the trust around responsibility, not genetics.

Mara later found a sealed recording in the mansion archive. Adrian spoke directly to the unborn child.

You may have my eyes. You may not. I hope you inherit none of my arrogance. I choose you because Claire loves you and because family begins where responsibility stops being optional.

Ethan listened alone.

Then authorized release of only that passage.

The public debate ended slowly.

For Ethan, it ended immediately.
