Chapter 06 - The Man Behind The Gate
Malcolm Cross arrived before the auditors.
His black SUV entered through the lower gate with two security vehicles behind it. The mansion system allowed them into the driveway but refused access to the main doors.
Malcolm stepped out furious.
At fifty-eight, he looked like the refined version of his son: broad shoulders beneath a dark suit, controlled voice, and eyes that measured every person by usefulness.
He saw Ethan through the glass.
Recognition came before introduction.
Claire’s face lived in the boy’s eyes.
Malcolm pressed the intercom.
“Ethan, open the door.”
Ethan stood inside the foyer.
“You knew my name.”
The guests went silent again.
Malcolm changed direction.
“I knew your mother.”
“You told the court I didn’t exist.”
“I protected you.”
Damon looked from his father to Ethan.
“You said he was fake.”
Malcolm ignored him.
He explained that Adrian’s enemies would have targeted any heir. Claire accepted financial support and agreed to privacy. The trust delay was necessary until Northstar stabilized.
Ethan held up the watch.
“Why did you spend sixteen years trying to find this?”
Malcolm’s expression hardened.
Claire’s records included invoices from investigators, school searches, and payments to obtain copies of Ethan’s medical files. Malcolm had not protected him.
He had monitored him.
The audit team arrived behind the security vehicles: two attorneys, a forensic accountant, and an independent trustee named Mara Keene.
Mara displayed a court order through the glass.
The house unlocked for her because Adrian had listed her firm as emergency trust counsel years earlier.
Malcolm’s security team could not follow.
He remained outside while Mara entered through the main doors and shook Ethan’s hand.
“Happy birthday,” she said.
Ethan almost laughed.
It was the first kind sentence of the night that did not ask him for something.
Mara examined the watch, the case, and the trust activation. Then she faced the crowd.
“Effective midnight, Ethan Hale is the verified beneficiary of the Adrian Hale Estate. Malcolm Cross’s authority is suspended pending fraud review.”
