Damon Without An Audience

Chapter 09 - Damon Without An Audience

Damon spent the morning in a guest bedroom without his phone.

Mara had not confiscated it. The mansion system simply disconnected devices registered to suspended Cross accounts. Damon could use a landline for emergency calls and legal counsel.

He called no one.

For the first time, he had no audience.

Without comments, followers, or friends reflecting his importance, the room felt hostile. The art belonged to Adrian’s estate. The furniture belonged to the trust. Even the glass walls had been designed by the father of the boy Damon mocked.

Damon found an old photograph in a drawer.

Adrian Hale stood beside Malcolm when both were young engineers. Adrian was thin, smiling, and holding the first Northstar sensor array. Malcolm stood slightly behind him, one hand resting on Adrian’s shoulder.

On the back, someone had written:

Build the compass before the crown.

Damon did not understand.

Ethan entered with Victor nearby.

“I need the room cleared for inventory.”

Damon held up the photograph.

“Did your father hate mine?”

“I never met my father.”

The answer cut through Damon’s instinct to argue.

He had grown up beside Malcolm and still knew little about him. Ethan grew up with absence shaped by Malcolm’s choices.

Damon looked toward the pool.

“I didn’t know who you were.”

Ethan’s expression remained flat.

“You knew I was someone.”

Damon understood the point.

He had believed cruelty became harmless when directed at a person without status. Learning Ethan was rich did not make the humiliation wrong. It only made Damon afraid of consequences.

“Are you throwing me out?”

“This isn’t my decision alone.”

“You own the house.”

“I control a trust under review.”

The difference confused Damon because his father had taught him ownership meant command.

Ethan continued.

“The auditors need forty-eight hours. You can remain under supervision or leave through the front gate.”

Damon laughed bitterly.

“With cameras outside?”

“You invited cameras here.”

The room went quiet.

Damon placed the photograph on the table.

For once, he had to choose without certainty about how the choice would look.

He left through the front gate.

Reporters shouted.

He did not smile.
