Victor Ward’s Regret

Chapter 12 - Victor Ward’s Regret

Victor’s calm public image concealed an old failure.

Years earlier, Catherine told him that a powerful executive had harassed her during a merger. Victor offered security, lawyers, and money.

Catherine wanted him to listen first.

He took over.

The executive was removed, but Catherine felt her experience had become another Ward acquisition.

Before she died, she made Victor promise Elena would retain control of when family power entered her life.

That was why he waited for the call.

Elena asked whether he regretted not intervening earlier.

“Every day,” he said.

“Would you change it?”

“I would make it easier for you to ask. I would not take the choice away.”

They sat in her new apartment without attorneys.

Victor apologized for teaching Elena that accepting help risked losing autonomy.

Elena apologized for hiding danger to protect a marriage.

Neither apology canceled the other.

Family repair began when power stopped competing with pain.
