Seven years after sentencing, Elena visited Adrian once.
He looked older and less certain.
He asked whether she had forgiven him.
“I no longer organize my life around anger toward you.”
“That isn’t an answer.”
“It is the only one I owe.”
He asked about the company.
She said Grace still led it.
He asked whether Victor finally admitted Adrian’s business talent.
Elena considered.
“My father always knew you were talented. Talent was why he trusted the company with capital.”
Adrian looked surprised.
“He never hated you,” she continued. “He distrusted what you believed talent entitled you to take.”
Adrian apologized without blaming Camille, debt, or Victor.
“I knew you were afraid, and I used it.”
Elena accepted the accuracy.
