The Necklace That Was Not Jewelry

Chapter 02 - The Necklace That Was Not Jewelry

The necklace had belonged to Elena’s mother, Catherine Ward.

Adrian believed it was an old family jewel worth perhaps fifty thousand dollars. He often suggested replacing it with something modern.

He never knew the oval diamond concealed an encrypted biometric key linked to Ward Sovereign Trust.

The blue stone did three things when pressed twice.

It transmitted Elena’s location.

It uploaded the previous thirty minutes of audio from the pendant’s safety recorder.

And it suspended every trust-backed license connected to the building.

The ballroom lights remained on, but the elevators stopped responding to Adrian’s commands. The private security team’s employer changed on their devices from CROSS MERIDIAN to WARD SOVEREIGN PROTECTIVE SERVICES.

The head guard, Marcus Bell, looked at Elena.

“Mrs. Ward-Cross, do you require immediate assistance?”

Adrian stared at him.

“You work for me.”

Marcus removed his earpiece.

“No, sir. Our contract is held by the property owner.”

Camille set down her glass.

“This penthouse is Adrian’s.”

Elena rose slowly with Marcus’s help after giving permission.

“No. Adrian leased it through a company my father controls.”

Adrian’s face tightened.

“Your father fixes agricultural engines.”

“He does.”

The answer confused him more.

Elena’s father enjoyed restoring engines at a rural workshop. It was not his source of wealth. It was the life he chose after withdrawing from public leadership of Ward Sovereign, the private infrastructure and technology fund that had financed Cross Meridian from its first year.

The ballroom doors unlocked from the outside.

Victor Ward entered in a plain charcoal suit.

He was sixty-eight, silver-haired, broad-shouldered, and calmer than everyone else in the room. Two attorneys followed him, along with a physician, a forensic accountant, and four officers from the trust’s independent protection unit.

Victor saw the marks on Elena’s arms.

His composure did not disappear.

It narrowed.

“Who authorized contact with my daughter?”

Adrian lifted both hands.

“This is a marital dispute.”

Victor looked at the security cameras.

“No. The audio describes attempted coercion, forged medical evidence, and a transfer of trust assets.”

Camille stood.

“You cannot enter a private residence.”

Attorney Naomi Bell opened a folder.

“This residence belongs to Ward Residential Holdings. Your permission to occupy it has been suspended.”

Adrian looked at Elena.

“You lied about your family.”

She answered quietly.

“I hid my father’s money to learn whether you loved me without it.”

May you like

Victor looked toward the leather case.

“And now she has learned.”
