The Necklace in Evidence

Chapter 17 - The Necklace in Evidence

The necklace remained in court evidence until appeals ended.

When it was returned, Elena did not wear it immediately.

For years, the pendant represented safety.

After the ballroom, it also carried the memory of needing rescue.

She placed it in a drawer.

Later, she worked with engineers to redesign the safety system as a discreet device available through domestic-violence and coercive-control organizations.

The commercial version contained no diamond.

It looked like an ordinary button.

Users controlled when it transmitted, what it recorded, and who received the alert.

Victor offered to name it Catherine.

Elena declined.

“Safety should not require knowing our family.”

The program became Open Signal.
