Why Elena Waited So Long

Chapter 06 - Why Elena Waited So Long

Elena had left Adrian twice.

Both times, he persuaded her to return.

The first separation followed the affair.

The second followed an argument where he broke a door and blamed her for making him feel powerless.

He never used the word violence.

He called it pressure.

Camille called it passion.

Company lawyers called it a private matter.

Elena feared that involving Victor would prove Adrian’s oldest accusation: that everything she achieved came from her father.

Victor had warned her when she married.

“Never hide danger to protect someone’s pride.”

At the time, Elena considered the advice controlling.

So Victor gave her the necklace and one instruction.

Call once if a closed door is being used to take your name, your movement, or your consent.

He promised not to interfere before she asked.

For six years, he kept that promise.

Elena sometimes resented his distance.

Now she understood the cost of respecting an adult child’s choices.

Victor could create an exit.

He could not decide when she used it.

Elena had waited until fear became unbearable.

That did not make the fear her fault.

It made the call late.

Late was still before midnight.
